Root: a Game of Woodland Might and Right
Root is a game of adventure and war where 2 to 4 players battle for control of a vast wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright.
The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Asymmetric Design
Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: the Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.
The Marquise de Cat
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie Dynasties
The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling.
The Woodland Alliance
The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence—but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check.
The Vagabond
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.

Well built and fun to play
We bought this game because of the design, I wasn’t expecting it to be so complex (in a good way).The rules took us about 1 hour to read, but once we understood all of the mechanics we can now open the box, set up and play without having to go back and read everything through again. There is a small follow-along rulebook to get you started, but we just went straight for the main rules instead.The design is stunning. Everything feels premium from the board to the individual pieces.A very fun game that takes us ~1 hour to complete each turn.

One of the best games i’ve played
This game is brilliant, and works well as two player. I love how when playing as different factions you have to adopt completely different strategies and you have different objectives to win the game. The more you play, you learn that it’s just as important to pay attention to what your opponent is doing as to what you’re doing.I also love the quality of this game, all the pieces are well made and visually appealing. This is quickly becoming a favourite of ours.

A really good game! Lots of complexity makes it a real step up from a lot of other ‘classics strategy games, but omg is it complicated to get to grips with!Not the kind of game you can just get your mates round to play…they have to do some serious ‘pre-work’ before they do!

Opening and exploring the box was a joy, everything is really high quality and nice to look at.There’s quite a bit in the box, you’ll need quite a large table to comfortably fit all the components, as each player has their own board, cards and tokens in front of them as well as the main map.The games clearly been through a lovingly thorough design process, and only once you play it do you see all of the games depth unfold.At first the rulebook looks daunting but it’s actually quite concise, and turns become very fast, making the game actually quite quick. There is quite a bit to it though, so probably best for people who’ve board gamed before, and definitely a more competitive crowd.

Interesting strategy game with cute premise
If you like strategy games and have the time and patience to master the first run through game you will love this! We cannot wait until our next Root session. We played for eight hours, around lunch and very relaxed with drinks. Time flew and we were enraptured. Weâve bought many expansions too⦠looking forward to meeting more characters.

Explaining and understanding the rules is a lot of work but the gameplay is very rewarding. Each player gets to choose a faction and plays differently. You always have to come up with creative ideas to deal with the situation at hand (depending on how good your opponents play) and no two games are the same. Best suited for 3-4 players!You can either choose to continuously play as the same faction to hone your skills and tactics, or you can switch it up each game to better understand all factions and make each replay a bit more interesting for yourself.
