Overall this is a really fun set. My toddler is absolutely obsessed with “roll rolls” which he affectionately calls a rolling machine and of course the cement mixer is a must with the “concrete”.
The compound is rather clumpy and does not flow like typical moldable sand would. This is great for building the blocks (if you make them compactly they are surprisingly sturdy once out of the mold) but makes it difficult to spread the concrete compound out if you are trying to roll/dig/do anything other than build blocks.
The BLOCK MOLD IS DIFFICULT TO RELEASE. Honestly, a three/four/maybe even five year old would struggle to release the compound from the mold. I figured out that if you squeeze opposite corners of the mold it helps to loosen and release the brick but this is very hard to explain to littles and requires coordination and strength.
It is pretty easy to clean up but I do wish that this came with a storage container or something to keep everything together in, but most toys don’t so that wasn’t really any knocks on the product itself. Overall great play value, good pricepoint, and would be a fun gift!
MSG2018 –
This is a great gift for toddlers who like to dig and play with machines. It’s marked for ages 3+ but I feel like a reasonably mature 2.5 year old could handle it, and it’s definitely still fun for kids older than 3.
SIGARM –
My son (and daughter) really like this set! It’s got just enough included to make for a fun activity to break out when they’re wanting something to do that doesn’t require a lot of supervision. We set it up in a bin because of other experiences with sand like material. However, I love the quality of this “concrete compound.” It stays together and doesn’t fall everywhere like kinetic sand. It’s very easy to gather up and clean up. We found similar sized CAT construction toys at the store that were inexpensive and they make a great addition to this playset. The machinery isn’t made up of heavy duty plastic, and it’s rather lightweight. However, I think it is well worth the price for the quality of the sand itself.
DSH –
The 4-year-olds this was for loved it. They are very into being “worker men” and they were excited from the moment they saw the box to get started. Everything about this was well-designed, even the packaging. The trucks were easy to remove and the kids could get started rolling them around while the adults opened the rest of the materials.
The sand to make the bricks compacts nicely and does not break off easily. The roads were fun to build and even more fun to destroy and remake. This is a great open-ended toy for young minds to work on problem solving.
EOTS –
I loved the kinetic sand as a concrete to make bricks. The kids spent hours playing with this set and making little construction blocks out of whatever dirt, play doh, and other mterial they could, but nothing did as well as the kinteic sand so we went out and bough a bunch of that so the kids can make little buildings out of it. Highly recommend this set!
